Modeling of Rakugo Speech and Its Limitations: Toward Speech Synthesis That Entertains Audiences

We have been investigating rakugo speech synthesis as a challenging example of speech synthesis that entertains audiences. Rakugo is a traditional Japanese form of verbal entertainment similar to a combination of one-person stand-up comedy and comic storytelling and is popular even today. In rakugo, a performer plays multiple characters, and conversations or dialogues between the characters make the story progress. To investigate how close the quality of synthesized rakugo speech can approach that of professionals' speech, we modeled rakugo speech using Tacotron 2, a state-of-the-art speech synthesis system that can produce speech that sounds as natural as human speech albeit under limited conditions, and an enhanced version of it with self-attention to better consider long-term dependencies. We also used global style tokens and manually labeled context features to enrich speaking styles. Through a listening test, we measured not only naturalness but also distinguishability of characters, understandability of the content, and the degree of entertainment. Although we found that the speech synthesis models could not yet reach the professional level, the results of the listening test provided interesting insights: 1) we should not focus only on the naturalness of synthesized speech but also the distinguishability of characters and the understandability of the content to further entertain audiences; 2) the fundamental frequency (fo) expressions of synthesized speech are poorer than those of human speech, and more entertaining speech should have richer fo expression. Although there is room for improvement, we believe this is an important stepping stone toward achieving entertaining speech synthesis at the professional level.

JCoLA: Japanese Corpus of Linguistic Acceptability

Neural language models have exhibited outstanding performance in a range of downstream tasks. However, there is limited understanding regarding the extent to which these models internalize syntactic knowledge, so that various datasets have recently been constructed to facilitate syntactic evaluation of language models across languages. In this paper, we introduce JCoLA (Japanese Corpus of Linguistic Acceptability), which consists of 10,020 sentences annotated with binary acceptability judgments. Specifically, those sentences are manually extracted from linguistics textbooks, handbooks and journal articles, and split into in-domain data (86 %; relatively simple acceptability judgments extracted from textbooks and handbooks) and out-of-domain data (14 %; theoretically significant acceptability judgments extracted from journal articles), the latter of which is categorized by 12 linguistic phenomena. We then evaluate the syntactic knowledge of 9 different types of Japanese language models on JCoLA. The results demonstrated that several models could surpass human performance for the in-domain data, while no models were able to exceed human performance for the out-of-domain data. Error analyses by linguistic phenomena further revealed that although neural language models are adept at handling local syntactic dependencies like argument structure, their performance wanes when confronted with long-distance syntactic dependencies like verbal agreement and NPI licensing.

DEJIMA: A Novel Large-scale Japanese Dataset for Image Captioning and Visual Question Answering

This work addresses the scarcity of high-quality, large-scale resources for Japanese Vision-and-Language (V&L) modeling. We present a scalable and reproducible pipeline that integrates large-scale web collection with rigorous filtering/deduplication, object-detection-driven evidence extraction, and Large Language Model (LLM)-based refinement under grounding constraints. Using this pipeline, we build two resources: an image-caption dataset (DEJIMA-Cap) and a VQA dataset (DEJIMA-VQA), each containing 3.88M image-text pairs, far exceeding the size of existing Japanese V&L datasets. Human evaluations demonstrate that DEJIMA achieves substantially higher Japaneseness and linguistic naturalness than datasets constructed via translation or manual annotation, while maintaining factual correctness at a level comparable to human-annotated corpora. Quantitative analyses of image feature distributions further confirm that DEJIMA broadly covers diverse visual domains characteristic of Japan, complementing its linguistic and cultural representativeness. Models trained on DEJIMA exhibit consistent improvements across multiple Japanese multimodal benchmarks, confirming that culturally grounded, large-scale resources play a key role in enhancing model performance. All data sources and modules in our pipeline are licensed for commercial use, and we publicly release the resulting dataset and metadata to encourage further research and industrial applications in Japanese V&L modeling.

T5Gemma-TTS Technical Report

Autoregressive neural codec language models have shown strong zero-shot voice cloning ability, but decoder-only architectures treat input text as a prefix that competes with the growing audio sequence for positional capacity, weakening text conditioning over long utterances. We present T5Gemma-TTS, an encoder-decoder codec language model that maintains persistent text conditioning by routing bidirectional text representations through cross-attention at every decoder layer. Built on the T5Gemma pretrained encoder-decoder backbone (2B encoder + 2B decoder; 4B parameters), it inherits rich linguistic knowledge without phoneme conversion and processes text directly at the subword level. To improve duration control, we introduce Progress-Monitoring Rotary Position Embedding (PM-RoPE) in all 26 cross-attention layers, injecting normalized progress signals that help the decoder track target speech length. Trained on 170,000 hours of multilingual speech in English, Chinese, and Japanese, T5Gemma-TTS achieves a statistically significant speaker-similarity gain on Japanese over XTTSv2 (0.677 vs. 0.622; non-overlapping 95% confidence intervals) and the highest numerical Korean speaker similarity (0.747) despite Korean not being included in training, although this margin over XTTSv2 (0.741) is not statistically conclusive. It also attains the lowest numerical Japanese character error rate among five baselines (0.126), though this ranking should be interpreted cautiously because of partial confidence-interval overlap with Kokoro. English results on LibriSpeech should be viewed as an upper-bound estimate because LibriHeavy is a superset of LibriSpeech. Using the same checkpoint, disabling PM-RoPE at inference causes near-complete synthesis failure: CER degrades from 0.129 to 0.982 and duration accuracy drops from 79% to 46%. LibriQuote: A Speech Dataset of Fictional Character Utterances for Expressive Zero-Shot Speech Synthesis

Text-to-speech (TTS) systems have recently achieved more expressive and natural speech synthesis by scaling to large speech datasets. However, the proportion of expressive speech in such large-scale corpora is often unclear. Besides, existing expressive speech corpora are typically smaller in scale and primarily used for benchmarking TTS systems. In this paper, we introduce the LibriQuote dataset, an English corpus derived from read audiobooks, designed for both fine-tuning and benchmarking expressive zero-shot TTS system. The training dataset includes 12.7K hours of read, non-expressive speech and 5.3K hours of mostly expressive speech drawn from character quotations. Each utterance in the expressive subset is supplemented with the context in which it was written, along with pseudo-labels of speech verbs and adverbs used to describe the quotation (e.g. ``he whispered softly''). Additionally, we provide a challenging 7.5 hour test set intended for benchmarking TTS systems: given a neutral reference speech as input, we evaluate system's ability to synthesize an expressive utterance while preserving reference timbre. We validate qualitatively the test set by showing that it covers a wide range of emotions compared to non-expressive speech, along with various accents. Extensive subjective and objective evaluations show that fine-tuning a baseline TTS system on LibriQuote significantly improves its synthesized speech intelligibility, and that recent systems fail to synthesize speech as expressive and natural as the ground-truth utterances. Breeze Taigi: Benchmarks and Models for Taiwanese Hokkien Speech Recognition and Synthesis

Taiwanese Hokkien (Taigi) presents unique opportunities for advancing speech technology methodologies that can generalize to diverse linguistic contexts. We introduce Breeze Taigi, a comprehensive framework centered on standardized benchmarks for evaluating Taigi speech recognition and synthesis systems. Our primary contribution is a reproducible evaluation methodology that leverages parallel Taiwanese Mandarin resources. We provide 30 carefully curated Mandarin-Taigi audio pairs from Taiwan's Executive Yuan public service announcements with normalized ground truth transcriptions. We establish Character Error Rate (CER) as the standard metric and implement normalization procedures to enable fair cross-system comparisons. To demonstrate the benchmark's utility and provide reference implementations, we develop speech recognition and synthesis models through a methodology that leverages existing Taiwanese Mandarin resources and large-scale synthetic data generation. In particular, we fine-tune a Whisper model on approximately 10,000 hours of Taigi synthetic speech data. Our ASR model achieves 30.13% average CER on the benchmark, outperforming existing commercial and research systems. By providing standardized evaluation protocols, diverse training datasets, and open baseline models, we offer a replicable framework with methodologies applicable to various linguistic contexts.

Tails Tell Tales: Chapter-Wide Manga Transcriptions with Character Names

Enabling engagement of manga by visually impaired individuals presents a significant challenge due to its inherently visual nature. With the goal of fostering accessibility, this paper aims to generate a dialogue transcript of a complete manga chapter, entirely automatically, with a particular emphasis on ensuring narrative consistency. This entails identifying (i) what is being said, i.e., detecting the texts on each page and classifying them into essential vs non-essential, and (ii) who is saying it, i.e., attributing each dialogue to its speaker, while ensuring the same characters are named consistently throughout the chapter. To this end, we introduce: (i) Magiv2, a model that is capable of generating high-quality chapter-wide manga transcripts with named characters and significantly higher precision in speaker diarisation over prior works; (ii) an extension of the PopManga evaluation dataset, which now includes annotations for speech-bubble tail boxes, associations of text to corresponding tails, classifications of text as essential or non-essential, and the identity for each character box; and (iii) a new character bank dataset, which comprises over 11K characters from 76 manga series, featuring 11.5K exemplar character images in total, as well as a list of chapters in which they appear.
